OSCAL conversion

Word to OSCAL converter

Turn a Word (.docx) System Security Plan into validated, machine-readable OSCAL.

Your SSP almost certainly lives in Word. FedRAMP, agencies, and NIST increasingly want it as OSCAL - structured, validated, machine-readable data. OscalIQ bridges that gap: it reads the Word document as it actually is, extracts the control implementations, parameters, and responsible roles, and produces validated OSCAL you can export as JSON, XML, or YAML - no hand-written markup.

Word to OSCAL, step by step

1

Upload the .docx

Bring in your Word System Security Plan exactly as it is - narrative sections, control tables, and copy-pasted control language.

2

Extract controls

OscalIQ pulls control implementations, parameter values, and responsible roles out of the prose and tables and maps them to the OSCAL SSP model.

3

Validate & export

The mapped data is checked against the NIST OSCAL constraints, then exported as OSCAL JSON, XML, or YAML.

4

Keep it living

Edit it as OSCAL going forward - you converted the Word file once, not every audit.

Word to OSCAL FAQ

How do I convert a Word SSP to OSCAL?

Upload your Word (.docx) System Security Plan to OscalIQ. It reads the narrative and control tables, extracts the control implementations, parameters, and responsible roles, maps them to the NIST OSCAL SSP model, validates the result, and exports OSCAL as JSON, XML, or YAML. From then on you maintain it as living OSCAL instead of re-converting the document.

Why can't I just save the Word document as OSCAL?

A Word SSP mixes narrative, tables, and control language in a layout meant for people. OSCAL requires every control implementation, parameter, responsible role, and component to be discrete, validated data with stable identifiers and cross-references. "Save As" cannot infer that structure - the real work is reading the prose and mapping it to the model, which is what OscalIQ automates.

Does it work on any Word SSP or only a specific template?

It is built to read real, messy, narrative SSPs - not only a perfectly structured template. FedRAMP and agency Word templates work well, and so do the non-standard documents most teams actually have.

Can it also read an Excel SSP?

Yes. OscalIQ ingests both Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx) SSPs and control workbooks. See the SSP to OSCAL converter for the general path.

What OSCAL output do I get?

A validated OSCAL System Security Plan you can export as JSON, XML, or YAML, ready for tooling, agencies, and 3PAOs that expect machine-readable OSCAL.
